Writer’s Block
Running out of ideas, or never coming up with the perfect ones can be daunting. Truth is, writing isn’t as easy as some may erroneously think. But if you’ll consider your purpose for writing, it should help you get on the right track. For instance, if you want to entertain your audience, think of irony as the master of irony, O. Henry, taught us in The Ransom of Red Chief. Maybe take time to read it; after all, it’s a really short story. If you want to teach or inform, consider what would be the most important thing for you to share. If you want to persuade, then what is so important to you that others should understand? Maybe even decide you’re right? Go to the webbing chart I posted earlier and start kicking around some ideas. I heard that Marjorie Rawlings was rejected by publishers until one of them challenged her to write »

Writing with Purpose!
It’s true, you know? Writers must write. We see people and events as story ideas and it never seems to end. The unending story belongs to writers with imagination and determination to write the best story God has placed within them. But if that’s the only purpose to writing – to write your best possible novel – what is your reward? Isn’t that rather personal and a bit solitary? Oh sure, some people will enjoy it, and maybe that’s enough for the writer. But that’s not enough for this writer. I want people to enjoy my books, sure! But I want it to inspire their lives, first and foremost. I want people, especially my readers, to know that their sins and grievous wrongs will not keep them from the love of God. Repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation are the main themes of my books. Why? Because they are the main »
Dealing With Writer’s Block II
If you’ve forgotten the first steps in dealing with writer’s block, please go back to my blog, “Writer’s Block.” Now that you’ve determined the strengths and weaknesses of your Villain, Hero, and Victim, you should web brainstorm interactions between these characters. Draw a large circle, about 1 inch in diameter in the center of your paper. Place the main theme of your story in the center circle. Themes vary, such as: crime, poverty, murder, gangs, injustice, and tons more. Next, draw about 5 other 1″ centimeter circles around the central circle. Place the names of your villain, victim, and hero in 3 of them and leave the other 2 blank for the names of 2 main, but subordinate characters, as they arise during your brainstorming. Now you see, you have three main characters in your outer circles and your theme in the center. Connect these outer circles to your central »

Dealing With Writer’s Block…
Writing is directly affected by mood. It’s like the connection between what you’re supposed to do and what you really want to do. When I find I’m having a slow start on writing any part of a novel, I find it helps to concentrate on my favorite character. I am not a fan of brainstorming but it’s really an essential tool of writing. To develop your characters, section off your blank paper (8 1/2 x 11″) with three vertical lines drawn equally apart, top to bottom. At the top of one column, write the name of your main character. Over the top of another column, write the name of your villain and over the remaining column, write the name of your victim (one character may be a combination of these – like the hero might also be the victim). Under each name, list 4 of that character’s strengths. Skip a »
